Title: SMP + Hardware RAID5 Poor Performance
Post by: Joshua on March 10, 2002, 08:06:52 AM
Hello, I thought I'd fish for comments here...

Here's the setup:
e-smith 5.1.2
Proliant 2500 (dual PPro), SMP kernel
Mylex 250 RAID Controller w/5 18.2 gigs setup RAID 5

The problem seems to be with IO. Everytime I access server-manager and modify a config the drive lights will come on and it seems to take forever for the server to finish. Even something as little as changing a user's password will cause a 20 second delay in response from the server. Logging in as root on the console will even take about 4 seconds to get a prompt. I've setup a single PPro machine with a single 4 gig drive and the performance is much better. Any ideas anyone???

Thanks,

Joshua

Joshua,

Did you have to do anything special to get SME 5.1.2 installed on the RAID array using the Mylex controller?

I'm trying to install on a Mylex AccelleRAID 352 and the installation blows up at the very end where it states "Performing post-install..."

Thanks,

G

I wish I could give you more info, but I didn't have any problems there. Any error messages?

I have a 352 I just picked up on eBay though, I was planning to slap it on a new sme machine. If you find out what's going on please let me know.

I thought I'd add some info here. Copying files to the raid is extremely fast, it's only when the system has to read/write from the stripe that it bogs so painfully.

I resolved the problem by disabling the built-in Adaptec SCSI controller on the mainboard, performing the install, then reenabling the on-board controller.

Now I just  have to find the best spot to insmod the aic7xxx module...

Thanks,

G
Title: same problem
Post by: Thijs Nijpjes on March 19, 2002, 03:01:38 PM
Hi,

I've the same problem with my 2500 server. I found that E-smith only reconises 16  MB of RAM. with both controlers enabled. Don't know what happens if I disables one.

I'm going to start a thread about the memory question.
