Title: Rename user
Post by: Devlyn Davis on March 27, 2002, 05:02:33 AM
Hi Folks,

Is there a way to rename a user?  Going to the 'modify user' section of the Server Manager, you are given the option of modifying everything except the user id.  As an example:

User Shirley Temple leaves the company.  Shirley is replaced by Betty Ford.  I would like to be able to just rename the account and have all of Shirley's stuff moved over to Betty's name.  Currently, the only solution (unless I'm wrong) is to create a new account and manually move all of Shirley's data and settings over to Betty.

Thanks for any insight,
-Dev

The moving of files is the quickest, and safest way.
( So you don't have to mess around with permissions etc...)

What if a person in the company were to be married and change surname?  How would an administrator handle that situation, relative to existing file permissions and e-mail names?

How difficult would it be to enable a 'copy user' feature?  I see this as valuable for creating user templates.

An administrator would simply need to create a few templates that all of the correct permissions and group memberships.  Then by copying that user template (with a new user name, of course) you would have a new user ready to go with just a few clicks and putting in the proper name.  This would also be useful for renaming a user.  Simply copy the existing user to a new username and delete the original user.

Is this implementable as SME stands now?

Thanks,
