Title: Slow network browsing on samba svr
Post by: Jerry Karn on April 10, 2002, 08:05:38 PM
Hello All,

I have a RedHat 6.2 box running samba.  It's not a pdc.  My new XP Pro workstation is having problems with it.  Browsing the shared files can take 5seconds, and opening on a file via double-click can take 20 seconds, where my win9x clients are nearly instant.

I also see weird issues connecting mapped drives (related to the encrypted smb password issue)

Since support.microsoft.com doesn't have concrete answers regarding slow LAN browsing, I'm thinking these problems are twofold:  Old samba/linux version, and possible smb.conf errors.

So my question is: What are the odds an upgrade from RH6.x to SME 5.x might clean up these issues and speed my network browsing problems?

Many, many thanks for any opinions you can offer!

-Jerry

Hi,

Well for 1 thing SME comes with a standard install of samba which works very well. There is also a upgrade possible to samba version 2.2.3a. (not standard)
Next to this you can edit your smb.conf to fir your needs (via templates).

So just give it a try on a spare box to see the results.

My experience with XP was a bit negative to say the least.

I was running a '98 box and kept my 'My documents' folder on an e-smith 4.1.2, no issues, no worries. When for a laugh I upgraded to XP Pro, I found that whenever I tried to 'Save As', XP would always tryt and open my documents first (on the server remember) and would ALWAYS take 4-5 minutes to do so.

I am now running Mandrake 8.2 on my workstation and loving it, it's teaching me much more about Linux too.:)

I have recently installed the SME 5.5, which is great, but I really suffer from slow writes (copy/move) to the server shares. When I read (open folders and execute files) on the shares there is virtually no delay. This tells me that there is practically no network delay - right?

What might cause the write slowdown - and what should I be looking for?

I would really like to keep SME-Server 5.5 as I think that it is a neat and tidy package, with a great GUI. This is very convenient for me (my UNIX SysAdmin is a little rusty).
