Title: space bar shuts down server
Post by: mike mattos on April 19, 2002, 12:48:28 AM
I have just shut down my server for the second time in two days by hitting the space bar !!

Typically, the sceen blanks after a period of inactivity, and I hit the space bar to see the screen.... ( well, it seemed like a good idea at the time !! )

First thing I see on the screen is dialog about killing sqids and demons !  yuk !

Is this a problem in LINUX or have I got a problem with my CMOS power saver which I could swear was DISABLED ?

thx

mike

Next time your system has gone to a blank screen hit the shift key rather than the space  bar.  It may be that 'shutdown' is selected and hitting the spacebar activates it.

Just a thought.

Check in your BIOS that you have all the power/energy save features switched off, and then check to make sure that it'll boot up without a keyboard (usually something allong the lines of HALT ON ALL BUT KEYBOARD).
Then powerdown your server, unplug the mouse, keyboard and screen and put it in a cupboard with just a network and power cable, switch it on and leave it alone.
Works just fine for me!
