Title: 2 NICs, external vs. internal
Post by: Max on May 22, 2002, 04:13:56 AM
I build a lot of SME servers, I always use 2 of the same 3com cards. I am going to be handing this job off, and I am writing directions no how to build a computer, install SME, etc.

My question is: How do I know which NIC is going to be picked for internal and which for external? is there any way to know or tell it which is which?

I use two different nics for that reason.

I have tested many nics for performance, and have found that nics with Realtek chipsets have exactly the same performance and CPU utilization as a 3Com nic.

Edimax happens to make a great Realtek nic and drivers, but there are hundreds of others out there who make them too.

Since they are fairly cheap (I get mine for $15), I connect the Edimax nic to the world, and a 3Com nic to the LAN.

Should some power surge or whatever damage the external nic, just pop in a new one, and spend the $$ you save on beer...
