Title: What to do in the even one drive dies in software raid?
Post by: Ty Tong on March 07, 2001, 01:49:14 AM
I'm just curious so that I can be prepared in the even that this occurs..  I tried just unplugging the first drive to see what would happen and I was just given a prompt, not sure what to do afterwards.  Anyone have firsthand experience with this that could give a general idea of what to expect and do to get things back up and running again?

I had a problem recently, and lost data on one of the RAID drives. When I reboot e-smith, the RAID system starting complainig, producing a lot of messages. After that, it started as usual, and everything was there. Then you have two choices.
First, and the one I did, reinstall e-smith (10 minutes) and restore a backup I had been making regularly; second, you can try to rebuild the RAID disk with the raid tools (ckraid, etc). In this case, I suggest having a look at the RAID HOWTOS, very helpfull.
