I have a linksys router that I am currently using for its wireless capabilites. I would like to continue to use it with an s.m.e. server acting as the gateway and firewall, so that the linksys is basically a wireless hub.
adsl--->e-smith--->linksys--->local wireless network

Surely you can change the LinkSys to perform as a Access Point, not a router/gateway. If you can, simply:
adsl--->e-smith-->hub (or X-Over)-->linksys-->WLAN
I've got a Compaq CPW2 and it'll let me choose to either be a router/gateway or a wireless access point. Hopefully Linksys will provide you the same functionality, else you will end up with a double-NAT configuration.
Internet->E-Smith-->[NAT]-->LinkSys-->[NAT]-->WLAN
Which would be pretty inefficient and redundant. Possible problem-prone as well.
Hope this helps,
Nathan

Does your linksys router also have several LAN hub/switch ports in addition to the WAN port? On the D-Link you can just use the LAN ports and it will behave like a access point (be sure to turn off dhcp)

How about
INTERNET -> SME -> HUB -> PC's AND ROUTER?

I do exactly that at home with a wireless Linksys access point/four port switch. The internal NIC on e-smith goes into a LAN port on the linksys. Nothing goes to the the WAN port on the linksys.
DHCP server is disabled on linksys. I can't remember if the linksys is getting its IP from e-smith DHCP or if I assigned it statically, but I can check that if you like.

This is what I'm doing. I connected the hub to my Linksys router in the WAN port... it's doing its own DHCP.
So, my laptop ends up on a 192.168 network where the rest of the house is on 10.0. (from SME). The double NAT hasn't caused any problems for me.
