Hello all,
I am using SME 5.1.2 and have recently upgraded IMP to version 3 and added RAV to scan mail files. I have now noted a problem... if i send and receive pdf files using this setup i receive corrupted pdf documents.
does anyone know the cause for this and how i may overcome it
thanks in advance

Now it gets even odder
I have managed ro repeat the problem on a fresh server install with the server in server only and server & gateway, with the following results, bear in mind this is on 2 differnet machines
1 Server Only : *all* pdfs sent via smtp and webmail are corrupted
2 Server & Gateway : all pdfs sent from the local interface are corrupted and all mail sent from the internet side are *OK*
This really has me foxed.
!Help!

Strange stuff. What OS/Browser combinations have you tried? Are always attempting to view the PDFs in a browser, or have you saved them to a hard disk, and opened them in Acrobat directly?

Hello Dan
The browsers i use are all variants of Win9x and Win2k + Internet Explorer (company standard), but, i am not sure that that is the root of the problem. I receive the same results of corruption if i send using Outlook Express or Outlook2000 or the IMP webmail. If i open the pdf files from internet explorer and directly form the Acrobar reader the intriduced corruption is the same.
By way of an aside, if i send the files from a stock distribution of SME 5.1.2 using webmail the problem doesnt appear. (well actually it has the hylrfax modifications as described by Rick Sulman). I have applied the modifactions regrding updates and ghostcript etc to the "Problem Server" - to match the working "Stock" release and this did not make any discernable difference..... does any of this last piece make any sense or have i rambled?

The possibility I was reaching for was an old (likely fixed) bug in Apache that would "corrupt" PDF, if they were retrieved through IE 5.x browsers. I don't know what impact this might have on your situation.
Are you retreiving all PDFs via webmail, or have you tried connecting an IMAP client, and detaching the PDFs. That would isolate whether the browser's download function was introducing the corruption.
Again...I'm just grasping at air here --- I hope it helps....

Mmmmm i will try the IMAP only client...
The apache "bug" you mentioned may be an avenue to look at, are you aware of any available rpm's to deal with this

Supposedly, the it was the 1.3.14 version of Apache that had this specific problem -- and SME 5.1.2 is past that version. I referred to it in case something you installed might have made changes that resurrected the bug.
Keep me posted :)

Hi Dan
I will be building a *dev* box this Saturday - and i will hopefully pinpoint/find the cause... if not the solution (fingers crossed)
If i find any bugs or rogue effects, who do you recommend i approach / inform.
I will DEFINITELY post back my (if any) findings
Thankyou for the support and assistance thus far :)
