We have an exchange server that sits behind esmith (Small Business Server 2000 to be exact).
I want to forward email from joe@mycompany.com to joe@mycompany.local.
Aside from changing the user settings on the esmith box to forward email to another address, I must be missing something as it's not working (and I'm pretty sure it's Exchange). The emails keep getting kicked back to the original sender with this message from Exchange Server:
Reporting-MTA: dns;grandcentral.mycompany.local
Received-From-MTA: dns;mycompany.com
Arrival-Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 22:00:19 -0700
Final-Recipient: rfc822;joe@[192.168.1.201]
Action: failed
Status: 5.3.5
Note that I tried in the above to forward to a person@[ip address], although it didn't make a difference. I've tried several different addressing techniques, but all produce the same result.
Does anyone here have some experience with Exchange Server being used primarily as a local email server, yet having it configured to receive forwarded email from esmith? I have little desire to expose an SBS2000 box to the outside world.

In the e-smith Server Manager panel -> Email settings
set the Exchange server IP in the Delegate mail server.
On the Exchange server set the relay server as the IP of the e-smith box.
That's all, its working for me.
