Title: Slow response on server

Hello Everyone,

I have a question, at our office I've installed 5.12 on an Dell Poweredge Dual 733/512MB and raid 5 with 4 disks. thisd works just fine.
When I open files with my laptop with win98 SE the files open as fast as it should be in my opinion, but when I open them on my workstation with win2000 the same file opens much slower !
So the server can't be the problem, but is this common problem with win2000 or does it conflict with something else.

W2K uses is NT and supports a much more sophisticated level of security, ie. user login etc. Those layers of security take time. That is probably what you are seeing. Security on Windows 95,98,ME is more show than substance so it doesn't take as long and can be easily circumvented.

I administer a network where we just upgraded every workstation to win2k pro and IMHO there has been a considerable slowdown in nearly every network connected program. I just thank god I noticed some serious network conguration errors about the time the upgrades occured which (correcting) offset the slowdown from win2k or there would have been a user revolt.

That's a bug in Win2k. When you connect to a remote machine the Windows Explorer program tries to open the remote registry to determine if the computer supports a Task Scheduler to display the Scheduled Tasks folder. The API that performs this operation takes a long time to time out and not work. (partially copied from MS)

This misfeature was fixed in a Win2k Service Pack (SP1?) Updating your Win2k to the latest version should take care of this. If not the following will do the same thing:

In your Registry delete the {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} sub-key to disable checking for scheduled tasks (or export and save if you're concerned you might want to undo this.) As soon as you delete this key it takes effect so don't bother to reboot, just do some remote browsing and see if things sped up.
