Hi all,
I've got two questions about backup and restore functions in SME:
- I reinstalled my testserver with SME 5.0 and want to restore from desktop. Everytime I try I get a time out or something like that in IE and Opera. Could anyone tell me how to restore manually by using the smeserver.tgz backupfile instead of doing it by using the server-manager?
- I have a Tandberg SLR6 (nowadays called SLR24) tapedrive installed in my "production" server with SME 5.1.2. SME recognises the scsi card and the tapedrive, so I supposed it would work to backup to tape by using the server-manager. But no luck :s
It says it is busy backing up, but there's nothing happening?! Anyone an idea on how to fix this?
It's the first time I work with a tapedrive so I'm a newbie with this. I tested the drive in windows XP and it worked without any problems; just to check if it isn't a hardware problem :)
TIA for any help!

Timothee,
re: question 1. Read this

As for question 2, sorry can't help.

Thanx Jon, I'll try that although it should be fixed in SME 5.1.2.
But even when this works, isn't there a manual procedure to restore? I suppose the .tgz file is being extracted, but what else happens at restore? Is it possible to do een manual restore from commandline?

Hello Timothee,
Maybe it will work with the restore now rpm from myezserver, let me know and I'll will e-mail it to you, or I can also send you a HowTo in Dutch.

Grapje Timothee, als je ff wacht heb ik misschien binnenkort wel een HP Colorado 8GB in de aanbieding, ik heb zelf een 24Gb DAT gekocht, dus is die Colorado over eigenlijk en die werkt wel in E-Smith.

Hi Paul,
I tried it with the backup now and restore now panels, but it didn't work. BTW, you already send me that howto before, remember? :P
Oh...the Tandberg SLR24 is recognised by SME (as it is by RH); the same with the scsi card. I can't remember exactly what scsi card it is, but the chipset is supported by linux and recognised by SME.
I just build in the device as I received it. Maybe it isn't configured right, but I never worked with tape drives before (not worked before with scsi at all !) so I don't know how it should be configured. The device is used before so I guess it is configured well (it works in windows XP).
I suppose it already had to work?! So, I don't know if it is the best solution to simply replace the drive with a HP Colorado, do you? :)
Anyone else experience with Tandberg drives and SME? Or has anyone else some ideas for me? I already heard it could work with taper, but I haven't tried that yet...of course I will.

Hello Timothee,
I'm still testing but I think I've found a solution, in the file cron.d I've added a line in between the line that the console makes when you enable tape backup.
The line I've added is the following:
15 19 * * * root flexbackup -newtape
This erases the tape and makes a new index on the tape the reminder message is sent at 19.10 and the backup starts at 19.20.
I didn't set the option erase_rewind_only false according to the flexbackup-howto because the line I've added takes care of this.
My test server made two succesfull backups on different dates, and I'm waiting for the third to start, I'll let you know how this topic will end.
