I had this error with version 5.5beta9 and couldn't fix it - in the end I got the ISP to deliver the via SMTP.
Which version of e-smith are you using?

Did you report the problem to bugs@e-smith.com? We release betas so that people can find and report bugs.

I'm using 5.5 _non_ beta ;-) but I will draw bug's attention to this thread. More users are reporting 'unexpected behaviour'
