Title: After 5.5 upgrade, things are a little.......slow.
Post by: Dave Owen on July 11, 2002, 08:31:44 PM
I recently upgraded from 5.0 to 5.1.2, then a few weeks later to 5.5.

I really like 5.5, with one exception: interaction with the web control panel seems painfully slow compared to previous versions on the same box.

I'm running on a local 100baseT network, and I'm currently the only machine in use on it, so it's not a congestion problem.

To give you an idea -- if I log into the web control panel, the right-side screen comes up right away, but the left-side screen takes more than 20 seconds...and often does not come up at all. Another example -- I tried to remove a port forwarding setting, then add another one. Both steps resulted in browser access and all other network services being lost...for more than two minutes! The machine is a Pentium II 300, and has not been changed since installation of 5.0.

Has anyone else experienced this?

It's slow because Mitel has a new way to display things in the web panel.  I don't know why they bothered to change something that wasn't broke in the first place.  The old panel worked perfectly.

Go figure... I guess it keeps the engineers busy fixing and breaking things.

Well, it wasn't broke if you had a good understanding of written English.  If you spoke a different language, the ability to include translations might be considered useful.

Ah, good. I don't mind the speed hit; I'm just glad to know it isn't a sign of imminent server collapse. :)

I installed 5.5 (fresh, wiped out the old partitions) on a machine that had been running 4.1.2 just fine, and it was so slow the left side panel was actually timing out when trying to access the e-smith-manager and the hard drives were REALLY thrashing.

I logged in as root and noticed (using the command "free -m -t" that it thought my machine had only 16MB of RAM.  I had to add an line to the LILO config and reboot in order to make it see all of my memory.  Check this command to see if it looks like your system is aware of the correct amount.

I don't know why v5.5 didn't recognize all my RAM (it's an old Compaq Proliant 1500).  Actually, I'm surprised it ran as well as it did with only 16MB available to the OS and services!!
