I've got running an 5.1.2 server-only(behind a gateway) at my school nicely. at home I have my my 5.1.2 server and gatway(dedicated cable-connection). whenever I try to connect 2 my school-server from my win2k wkstn from home the connection dies after checking the username/password.
when I try to connect from a standard modem connection from anywhere the connection works immediatly and I have access to all the machines in the workgroup!
any thoughts ?
thanx

Sorry - nothing to say - I'm all ears. I have to post something to get the "Email replies to this thread, to the address above." link .
I have also experienced difficulty in getting a pptp vpn connection from a workstation behind an SME server to a remote SME gateway. If i use a dialup for my internet connection - no trouble. Seems like the local SME gateway doesn't permit the connection?

I have a VPN Connection working from behind an SME box setup with SME 5.5 as a Server & Gateway
I have no problems with 5.5, but since this is the first one I have used I cannot comment on 5.1.2
Hope that helps..

Rob,
I know that Windows 2000 is set to connect with an option (under the security tab of the PPTP connectiod) set "Require data Encryption (disconect if none)"
It also validates passwords with "Require secured password", are there similar things in Windows 98... (I dont have a 98 machine at hand)

It sounds to me like your encryption is perhaps not 128 bit. Check if there is an update for your particular version of W2K, SP1 SP2 etc. I remember reading recently at Microsoft web site that there is an update for "high encryption". The immediate disconnection is a classic sign of that problem. sme needs 128 bit.
There are different DUN updates for Win98 (DUN14-98.exe) and for Win98SE (DUN14-se.exe), you have to get the correct one to get it to work.
I can connect OK through a local sme 5.1.2 to a remote sme 4.1.2. from W95B and W98SE or by dial up from standalone PC to Internet. Haven't tried W2K yet
