Is it possible to setup/configure a Jabber server (running on e-smith or other) to log ALL instant messaging conversations - even those to AOL/Yahoo/MSN via the gateways?

Hi,
JFYI, FWIW
Be aware of the legal issues. In some countries it is illegal to log this kind of information, with or without users knowing this. Also the keeping an archive maybe restricted by legal regulation.

RequestedDeletion,
Thanks for the "heads-up", but in fact it is for legal reasons that I ask the question. I need to have the IM logging in order to comply with NASD/SEC regulations for the financial services industry. There are commerical applications available (such as FaceTime "IM Auditor") which will do this, but they are expensive.
Along with the logging features (if available) I will also need the ability to display a message/disclaimer on all IM's letting both parties know that the IM conversation is being logged. Anybody have ideas on this?
I'd like this logging and the disclaimer to be handled at the Jabber server, and not the client - if possible. Thanks for your ideas/tips/thoughts.
Regards,
Patrick

have you looked on freshmeat.net?

Yes, this is all possible and not even that hard with Jabber. If you want to do this on Mitel SME grab the rpm that Jon Blakely put together (http://khunjarnet.com/downloads/jabber) and read the Jabber server documentation at jabber.org. By editing the jabber.conf file you can set a "zillion" options - logging messages and displaying a discalimer are all in there.
Good luck!

Noah...and guys,
Thanks for your replies. I had downloaded and installed Jon's excellent rpm for e-smith/SME. (Kudos and thanks, Jon.) The jabber.org documentation doesn't specifically explain the settings for logging "content" of IM messages. (unless I missed it)
Does the jabber.conf file allow for logging of actual jabber IM "content" or just the user id/session stats, etc.? Again, thanks for your tips and suggestions.

Is there an e-smith template you can modify instead of a direct editing?
Thanks,

Hi folks,
I understand this is not a Jabber forum, but I'd like to know the answer to the logging question as well. "Does the jabber.conf file allow for logging of actual jabber IM "content" or just the user id/session stats, etc.?"
