I have sucessfully run a abckup manually before, but I am getting the followimng error when E-SMITH 5.5 tries its daily backup.
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Tue Aug 6 02:00:27 2002
DUMP: Dumping /dev/sda6 (/) to standard output
DUMP: Added inode 7 to exclude list (resize inode)
DUMP: Label: /
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
DUMP: estimated 489561 tape blocks.
DUMP: Volume 1 started with block 1 at: Tue Aug 6 02:00:56 2002
DUMP: dumping (Pass III) [directories]
DUMP: dumping (Pass IV) [regular files]
buffer (writer): write of data failed: Input/output error
bytes to write=10240, bytes written=-1, total written 1480K
DUMP: Broken pipe
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted
I have quite a bit of extra stuff on this server including SARG, Phorum, System Monitor and Movable Type. Has anyone any idea why the backup is failing?
Thanks

I'd say that it is due to an "input/output error". Are you sure that your tape drive is working and the tape is OK?

Could be the tape, will try another, thanks.

You didn't include the beginning of the backup log, but does it indicate that the backup is starting at block 0?
If this is the case, you will find that re-running the backup _without_ removing the tape will result in a successful backup (and the starting block will be a higher number).
I have had a similar problem which I reported to Mitel some time ago, although they have not been able to resolve it so far. FYI, my hardware is a Seagate Hornet Travan 5 tape drive on an Adaptec 2906 SCSI adapter.
