What is the specific meaning of the subdirectories cur, new, tmp

Obviously cur (means current), new  means (I think new mail, unread??) and what does it do with tmp??

i think the hide deleted files will go on there, any when you open a attachment from your webmail the temporary files will also go there.
as far as i know

Basically it is where qmail forms incoming e-mails before they go into the new directory. It is sort of a safety mechanism.
