When I am using the web console to add/remove host entries into the server it does not update the /etc/hosts file, instead it modifies the /home/e-smith/hosts file. Is it supposed to do this and if it is could you please explain why? I have made a template in the /etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/hosts directory and modified it there and everything is fine. I just thought you should be able to modify it from the web console. By the way I am logged in as 'admin' when I am doing this. Thanks for your help.

The /home/e-smith/hosts file is used to update the DNS information which the e-smith server exports. If you change /etc/hosts, that change is only available to programs on the e-smith server - if you change the information in DNS, the new hostname is available to the e-smith server and to any machines on the LAN.
