Title: Appletalk -50 Errors when copy files to E-smith...
Post by: Scott Vickrey on October 24, 1999, 01:57:43 AM
Hi,
Cudo's to the e-smith team. Easy setup and configuration of the server.

I'm evaluating an e-smith server for a print shop client. They're using Macintosh computers and an overworked Appletalk server (non-IP Appletalk server).

At home, I've established an e-smith server with a couple of macs as clients. The macs are using system 8.6.1 and I'm using the e-smith server's DHCP server capability.

I have a single user account created along with the IBAY file area shared as a "network" resource on the e-smith server.

When I connect to the e-smith server as either the user (account created earlier) or as the e-smith "admin" and attempt to copy files to the e-smith server in the IBAY area created above, I invariable encounter this error message whether a large number of files are transferred (yes some folders and files DO get written) or just a few files:

The item "(file name here)" cannot be written, because an error -50 occurred. Do you want to continue?

The dialog box presents a STOP or CONTINUE button. When either of these buttons is pressed, the dialog box clears away and the copy operation immediately HALTS.

Folder permission (from Mac point of view) for "files" folder are:

Owner: admin
User/Group: shared

Are there limits to the appletalk feature of the e-smith server? My e-smith server is a Micronics Pentium 166 w/64Mb RAM and a 13Gbyte hard drive. Ethernet cards are latest and greatest Intel EtherExpress 100 and a Kingston TX100 (all PCI).

Thank you for any help or insight.

Hi Scott,

I found your post on e-smith.org while trying to solve the same problem. I know that your post is almost two years old.

The -50 error occurs when trying to copy an executable file to an ibay. It doesn't occur when an executable file is copied to a user's home directory.

The difference between ibays and home directories is the directory permissions. The user's directory has permissions drwx------ and the ibay's directory has permissions drwxrws---.

Did you or anyone find a good solution to this problem other than changing the permissions on the ibay directories?

Chris
