Ever since I switch to version 5.5 from 5.1.2 my memory is running at 98%.
Yesterday I upgraded the box to 350 mhz from 200 and memory to 256 from 64 thinking this was the problem. To my surprise it was not. So I did a search in this forums and found some #@$%@#% answers. Ok type free -m to see my real memory use. Wow great help there, shows the same as info phpsysinfo. There is probably a bug in this version 5.5.
I will be going back to 5.1.2. The server is soooooooooooo slow at times it takes forever to copy a simple file.
What do I need here P4 2gigs and 1gig of memory to get this to work right?
The whole idea of Linux is that it does not require a lot of horse power to run.
I will be installing 5.1.2 when I get home tonight.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Thanks,
Dom.

I installed 5.1.2. and the memory use was low. However, after I upgraded Samba
it went back to 98%. I beleive the problem is with the new version of Samba 2.2.5-4. I will uninstall it and install 5.5 and don't upgrade samba and see what happens.
Please give me some suggestions.
Thanks,
Dom

I upgraded fra version 5.12 to 5.5. After the upgrade the server has become slooooooooow. I have made a posting about this earlier but got no reply. I plan to downgrade to version 5.12 when I get the availabel time.
Since i am a newbie to linux i have to consider what to do with my users data. Got any ideas on how to preserve user rights to mail and data when downgrading?

Your sme server is working as designed !! They deliberately use available free memory.
Your slowness problems may be to do with something else.
Have a look at these threads, particularly the last one from Rich Lafferty

I upgraded 5.1.2 to 5.5 and used the services panel to turn off atalk, smb, ftp, ldap, & lpd. My memory usage with 512MB of RAM is:
93.28 MB Used
418.26 MB Free
So Samba may be one of the main programs using a lot of your memory. It appears without running those services, the memory usage is much lower.
