Title: Telstra Internet Direct ADSL

Has anyone connected an SME server to Telstra Direct with ADSL ?

We currently have SME 5.5 on Telstra Direct Modem, but finding the download volumes & web traffic a bit much for a modem.

Short answer = YES. It works just fine.

Just be sure to get an ethernet ADSL Modem not USB. I'm using a D-Link DSL 300 and have clients using Alcatel all seem to be working great with PPPoE.

The only reason I queried, is that in previous threads, there is no mention of using the Telstra Direct ADSL, which provides static IP, DNS provisions, statistics, etc.

Can you confirm you are using Telstra Direct (formely BigPond Direct) rather than normal Bigpond home user ADSL.

Aren't they rather pricey? TPG Internet have 256k Static ADSL (Unlimited downloads) for $89 per month, and they work beautifully with E-smith.

I am using Alwaysonline as my ADSL ISP and its also a static IP.
It works fine using an alcatel ethernet modem.
Like Bob King said just use PPPoe for your connection type.

If you are using TPG, how have you done your DNS records, and do they provide secondary MX in case of ADSL dropout ?

I use www.mydomain.com for all my dns and I don't bother with secondary mail servers as the DSL connection is quite reliable now combined with E-smith as the primary mail server.

I have used internal Pulsar ADSL cards that support PPPOE and Bridged Ethernet with Telstra and various other ISP's in WA without a problem on SME.

You can find out info and purchase from www.traverse.com.au.

I use www.zoneedit.com for my DNS records, and they have an optional backup MX service which costs next to nothing. So using TPG + the above gives you everything that Telstra ADSL Direct gives you (and more) at a much lower price.

Worth taking a look at.

Question without notice for Craig, I am looking at a Pulsar for myself, Was there much involved in setting up the internal card or is a How to available.

The supplier of the Pulsar ADSL internal PCI card is a company called Traverse Technologies www.traverse.com.au

You can give them a ring or email them if you like and see if they will sell to you direct as they are primarily a wholesaler. If they won't sell to you directly they will give the details of the nearest dealer. If not let me know as I am a dealer and will be able to sell one to you.

I have a simple HowTo that I can send you offlist if you like.

Let me know how you get on with Traverse and if you want the instructions on how to setup uner SME.

Didn't want to spend the $$ before testing.
