It's my understanding that the backup holds not just the configuration settings but all data from your ibays, etc. So if you have a bunch of stuff in ibays or your webserver, your backup can get pretty large.

Does it back-up the entire hard disk of the e-smith box?

Also RPM's I installed?

The backup facility is covered in great detail in the e-smith manaual:

http://www.e-smith.org/docs/manual/4.1/admin-backup.html

Summary:
Backup to Desktop - only accounts, ibays, configuration
Tape Backup - entire system
Restore (from Desktop or Tape) - only accounts, ibays, configuration

If you store the rpms you installed in an ibay or a user home directory, then they will also be backed up.

Regards,

Jay
