We have MRTG running quite well on a number of boxes.  We just put it in an Ibay and build the configs.

Very simple.

Have you installed PERL, or is'nt that necessary?

Perl, in all it's glory, is pre-installed on your SME Server. You may need to install some Perl modules to get MRTG to work. I'm not familiar with it, but either way it should be easy to do.

You can found CACTI to SME on:

I have found that some of the latest versions of MRTG will not work with E-Smith.  I have setup several 5.1.2 SME boxes with MRTG ver 2.9.17 with any problems and no additional modules are necessary.  But as Jader mentioned Cacti is well worth a look.
