Title: admin can't change settings
Post by: Jim Bradley on April 11, 2001, 06:58:51 AM
I just installed e-smith 4.1.1 yesterday, and was fairly impressed. But, alas, when I tried to play with the settings today, I can't. I get an error message stating that I "don't have permission to access / on this server". After I login to the e-smith machine directly as admin, when I  choose item 6 to access the e-smith-manager, after entering the password, I get a similar message about not having permission. After the basic installation, I added e-smith-squidGuard, as well as the e-smith-dialin and mgetty, but have made no other changes. Any clues as to what I need to do to regain access to the e-smith-manager, save from a reinstallation? Thanks for your help.

Jim,

did you by any chance create a lot of groups and make "admin" a member of them? I did this and got exactly the same symptoms. I can offer you a couple of solutions that worked for me (one from experience, the other two provided by e-smith and a local e-smith partner). Let me know if this is the case.

I too have the same problem as above.
I installed the Dialin RPM which is listed on the "HOWTO" page, and now get the error "Your are not authorised to access this resource /"
I didn't change any of the admin settings, and I have found that when I load the webpage it no longer prompts me for a username and password. The server seems to direct straight to port 980 (the default admin port on my box) without any user login prompts.

Any ideas?

Pete.

I was sent a couple of suggestions from Richard Bruce (rbruce_AT_cfpress.co.uk), and the one that solved the problem was to do:

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

After performing the above, I can now change the settings, both via the web login, as well as when logged in as admin. Hope this helps you.

I had also installed dialin, so I think that it's doing something. I haven't yet had a chance to try to dial in, so I can't comment on that addition, yet.
