Title: Delegate email server question
Post by: Ryan on November 19, 2002, 07:12:39 PM
When using a delegate email server on 5.1.2, will the email get forwarded if no user accounts exist for the email received (on SME)?  Will it forward all email that makes it past obtuse-smtpd?  I have asked this question several times and no responses.  Someone please reply if you have any knowledge or use a delegate email server.

Thanks,

Ryan

does delegate mailserver not just port forward the mail traffic without passing it through SME's mailsystem at all?

Yes.

Yes, however it does not port forward as was suggested.  Mail is fully processed on the SME server and then sent to the delegate mail server.

For SME 5.1.2 you get:
smtp --> obtuse-smtpd --> qmail-queue --> delegate mail server

For SME 5.5 you get:
smtp --> smtp-mailfront --> qmail-queue --> delegate mail server

BTW, if you have RAV AntiVirus installed, RAV will protect your delegate mail server:
smtp --> smtp-mailfront --> RAV --> qmail-queue --> delegate mail server

I stand corrected Darrell. Supposing for the sake of argument I  didnt want mail to pass through the SME mail system at all, without bringing a mail server out from the protected side of the SME network - could I do this?

Darrell,

Thanks for the information.  Right now my SME 5.1.2 is in a subdomain of the email domain (SME=phx1.mydomain.com).  If I set the delegate email server option and set a virtual domain=mydomain.com, will this allow me to accept email for mydomain.com on SME and forward it to exchange (exchange=mydomain.com) on the lan without having to reconfigure my SME to be mydomain.com?

Will the failure notices from the delegate box make it back to the email sender or just to the SME box?

http://www.dungog.net/sme/products/vdomain.php $25

does this by modifying the dns records for the virtual domain on the sme server so the mail is forwared directly to the delegated server without getting to qmail
