I am trying to get name resolution while pinging on my SME server. I have my ISP DNS server's IP listed as the Master DNS server, but I still get unknown host when trying to ping domain names. Pinging IP addresses works fine. Any suggestions?

What version of SME are you running?
-
SME Server 5.5
-
how does '/etc/resolve.conf' look like?

Where did you do this? If you did this in the intial configuration, do it again and leave it blank.

Ok, then what? Can you no longer assign a Master DNS server from the admin utility in SME 5.5?
-
Well 5.5 is it's own DNS talking direcly with the root servers on the net. So give it a try ans leave it blank.

ok, so if I remove the entry, and add the DNS IP in /etc/resolve.conf in place of 127.0.0.1 it works. How can I permenately modify this file? Where do I put/name the custom template, and how do I get it to use it?

custom templates gonna be in /etc/e-smith/templates-custom iirc. Do a search on here for how to activate it. There are dozens of similiar posts to do with custom template files - remember and set it for more than last 30 days when you run the search.
