Hi there.. I just installed the e-smith, which is connected to my win2k, but I the modem is not working yet. Can I still configurate the e-smith from my win2k without internet access? If yes...(I got an IP address assigned by e-smith, that mean they are talking to each other), what ip should I type in my browser on Win2k instead of typing www.myname.com/e-smith-manager?
pls give me some suggestions...
Thank you.

If you accepted the default settings during the initial setup of e-smith, the ip address of the server should be 192.168.1.1

http://www.myname.com/e-smith-manager should work fine, since your computer is configured via DHCP, and will be resolving names via the DNS server feature of the e-smith server.
Be sure to read the fine manual.

Ale: I accepted the default settings during the initial setup... "But THE MODEM IS NOT WORKING YET" and I tried to load http://192.168.1.1/e-smith-manager from my win2k browser...e-smith manager couldn't load up.
Do I need to make internet work first in order to access e-smith manager?

I accepted the default setting from initial setup... the server ip is 192.168.1.1 and the range from DCHP is 192.168.1.65 to 192.168.1.256.. but the following netstat table didn't show my LAN IP address between the range... What's wrong with my server or win2k setting... Pls help.... Thank You..

first of all You should follow Charlie's advice "read the fine manual" (as I'm a newbie)
As far as I see..(range 169.254.yyy.zzz ) your windows machine is not raly "talking" with the dhcp server of e-smith, The first test to do is a simple ping from the win2k pc to 192.168.1.1 if you receive a reques timed out here is the problem....
... you could try to double check the tcp ip configuration of w2k pc and see if it is ok (probably is not ok)....wait....there is a win 2k command at command prompt type ipconfig, and you'll get your current ip configuration probably 168.254.170.23?
ipconfig with /renew option, will try to locate a dhcp server in the fisical network and if it finds it will get an ip address lease automaticaly.
this is true only if windows 2k is configured as follows
your w2k tcp ip properties tab should be configured to obtain an ip address automatically, in advanced options should say "dhcp enabled"
e-smith works just fine and, as Charlie says, has also a fine manual... search on it about configuring clients pc, let me see...
http://www.e-smith.org/docs/manual/4.1/configclients.html
the info is w95/98 oriented but the concepts should help you
The other reason could be hardware (nics or connections etc)
could be wrong at the e-smith which should have warned you about a hardware problems at installation time.
in this case check the cables, nics and drivers I think yours are fully supported by e-smith.
hope this help.. if not write again...

Anders:
could you describe your scenario?
you have many routes active....as part of a bigger network
have you isolated the network segment where you are setting up the e-smith server and its network?
You should have only one dhcp server (e-smith) active per network segment.

Hi Ale:
The basic structure of my LAN is TWO PCs were connected together, 486 is installed with E-smith and other is installed with Win2k, but 486 one got NO Internet Access. I have tried to set E-smith as (Server and Gateway), also tried to set Server Only. Both have the same problem.
E-smith got one network card installed, it had no conflict/problem during the installation. Also, I have set up the win3k probably with Enabled DHCP, ip assigned automatically..etc.
Here is the further testing I have done few mins ago.

Anders:
Obviously your Win2k PC is not contacting your dhcp server
In your ip leases i see a ppp adapter,
you should have not this adapter installed that if you plan to use e-smith as the gateway of your network
so you can remove it
the modem should be in the e-smith box
and you should not have a ics (internet connection shared) in your windows neither
so you should only have intalled
microsoft network client
ethernet adapter
and tcp ip protocol
in your w2k pc
the e-smith should have dhcp enabled (leave the deffault settings)
(by the way... what kind of connection you plan to use?)
is not yet relevant if your modem works ok or not, to start up the server (at least as server only) then we can take that problem too.
The other reason that could be ,as I say before is wiring or hub or something
By the way are you using a utp crosswire? a coaxil?
doublecheck all of your hardware related things there is a big chance of being the cause of your headache ;)
hope being helpfull
alejandro.

Ale:
E-smith is running as SERVER ONLY.
I am going to use cable modem/Broadband soon, but I would like to connect two pcs together first and make sure the e-smith can be run probably. Also, two computers are connected with UTP crosswire (without hub).
As you said... win2k is not connected to DCHP server, then how come I got the 168.XXX,XXX.XXX address on my LAN.
BTW.. the modem is not working on E-smith, so I have to put it back to Win2k for checking email and getting Help, so you could see the PPP connection....
I will disable the ICS...

Windows just makes up a number if DHCP fails.

even more... windows 2k specifically resolves to this IP range when dhcp server is not found, in order to keep some networking alive for the segment (which also generates a potential gap)
so that's why you have an address, in that range 169.254.---.---
Check your hardware (crosswires home builded fail often)
maybe you should change your crosswire utp connection or get a hub (you will need it in case of expanding your lan)

Hi Ale.. I will try again later....
Thanx your help....
