Title: Cache in server mode
Post by: Ray on December 08, 2002, 06:06:19 AM
I am new to networks so I'm sorry if this is too basic a question.  I want to setup an e-smith server in my network to use the email, mail, and web cache services but not use it as the gateway.  Can this be done?

Yes, it can be done right out of the box. Just give it a try.

Would the internet traffic then go in and out of the same NIC (i.e. the server will only need one NIC)?

Would I just route all port 80 calls to this server?

I'm no expert on the technical details of Linux (or even the deeper aspects of internetworking), but I'm not sure if it's possible to use SME as a web cache without using it as a gateway. Is there a specific reason you don't want to use it as the gateway? You're already thinking of routing all the traffic through it, so it seems a bit illogical to me to not use it as the gateway...

I use SME 5.1.x in this way.
I have one nic installed in the SME and configured for server only. I have a DSL Firewall that sends Web and email traffic to the SME server. I setup clients to use SME as the proxy server. Everything works fine for me.

Hope this helps you.

I need to be able to monitor traffic, implement bandwidth throttles, etc.  I am using a MikrotikOS as router software on a different box and would like to use sme for services.
