Title: making a duplicate of SME 512 over the LAN
Post by: Greg on December 09, 2002, 04:09:40 PM
Hello

I need to duplicate an SME 5.1.2 server system (running mirrored drives) to another system as a backup (running mirrired drives) Is there a way of duplicating these whilst the original server is running? Or is there some other way you may suggest doing this.

We are moving the server to a different IP address and wanted to run the two servers simoultaneously whilst the DNS records propagate from one to the other.

TIA
GREG

My thoughts:

Take the drive2 out of server1 and put it into server1 (as drive1)
Start Server2 and rebuild raid with a new drive as drive2

Not sure if it work work though :-)

Otherwise take a look at http://www.partimage.org/ ... this is a tool what one can use for cloning similiar to ghost..... Cant do an image one the fly though....

Cheers

Or you could to try a High Availability Server (2 servers working as 1)

yep good thinking

It worked well :)

Using Ghost I duplicated the HDD on server one and used it in server 2 temporarily.

I changed the dialin to PPPoE on the duplicated drive to ensure it worked well and it did. A smooth change over from ADSL to PPPoE.

Thanks Scotty.
