Title: remote access
Post by: bud on December 17, 2002, 01:18:31 AM
Here is my setup:

Remote User (Win98) --> Internet --> SME5 firewall --> Win2000 File server

How can I get my Windows 98 client to access files on the Win2000 file server?  They successfully connect to the SME 5 server/gateway via PPTP, but they get an accessed denied message when trying to connect to shares on the Windows 2000 File server.

If anybody can help, that would be appreciated.

Do you have a Windows domain on the Win2k network? Make sure the client's PPTP connection has "Logon to domain" enabled. Do you have a separate WINS server on the network? Make sure you specify that to the SME, so clients connecting to it can access the WINS info. Does the SME user have the proper permissions to access the server?

Yes, the Windows 2000 File Server is a domain server.  Thanks Bill.

These are the steps I have been looking at:

1. Enable "Log on to Network" in PPTP VPN client (Win 98)
2. Make sure Client for MS Networks --> uses domain login.
3. Client logs in.
4. Establishes VPN connection to SME.
5. Try's to access Windows 2000 Domain server.
