Title: creating group in 5.5

When trying to create a group through the Manager, it just sits there when I try to Save the creation.  It's some customization I did (a Perl module maybe), as another 5.5 system is just fine.  Until I figure out why (any suggestions welcomed) can I just use groupadd?
