Here is the scenerio. I though I had this VPN and browsing connected local and remote machines but it seems I was celebrating too soon.
Local network:
SMC 7004VBR Router
SME 5.6b7 in server only mode setup also a PDC
WXP Machine
Remote:
WXP Machine using PPTP to VPN into the local network
When my partner logs in remotely as ADMIN and I am logged in locally, on my XP Box, as my regular user on the domain through the PDC he can browse the shares on both the SME server and my WXP machine in the local network. I in turn can browse his remote machine.
When I log in locally as admin or a user and he logs in remotely as a user he can ping the sme server, set to WINS server on the XP client by the way, but can only browse the shares on the server and not the XP box. In turn I cannot get access to his machine at all.
As far as I can tell his user, at leat on the local XP box had admin rights but this shouldn't be a problem since the PDC is authenticating him. Only when he logs in as admin can he get access to the shares on the XP local machine.
What am I missing????

have you enabled the user he logs in as on your computer
if not you either have to enable guest mode or add the user.
This is assuming that your winxp machine is not in domain mode.
Hope this is what your looking for.

I agree. It sounds like a user-permission problem between the two XP computers. The VPN only makes the remote computer "local". You still have to have the proper permissions on shares for others to access.
