Title: xbox xstreamer
Post by: Malcolm Faed on December 21, 2002, 12:14:59 AM
Hi all,

I would like to install xbms (xbox media server) on my SME5.5 in order to stream my mp3s, movies, etc. Unfortunately I don’t have a development system to compile the server. The source is available from http://www.h4x0rz.de/ in the downloads section. ( the player info is available from http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de)

Has anyone compiled the binaries for an SME server, or is willing to compile the source that they could share? Goggle and forum searches have been unsuccessful.

This would be the "icing on the cake" for my xbox set-up.

Thanks for listening and a very merry Christmas to all the great contributors to this forum.

Regards,
Malcolm

http://www.stickit.nu/utils/xbms-i386_0.30.5.tar.gz

Note, after untarring be sure to chmod +x the xbms executable.  The source code has been included with the executable binary.

Hope this helped,
Nathan

Question:
Is an XBOX mod chip required to execute the XBOX Media Player?

"Q: Can you use the Xbox Media Player on Xbox™ without a modchip installed?
A: Unfortunately the answer is no. It is very unlikely that there will never be a version of this media player that will run on a un-modded Xbox™, but we can always hope."

Oh well, Malcolm, let me know if the Media Player is any good, I hate that my XBOX doesn't support SVCD/VCD without a mod-chip.

Wow, Thanks Nathan.

I have installed it and it looks like it will work.

Unfortunatly spousal aproval was not forthcoming with the xbox. Perhaps Santa will be more generous :)

Anyway. I hope to get an xbox soon, but unfortunatly not as soon as I thought.

If anyone has tried it, can you let us know if it works?

Thanks again, merry Christmas and happy new year.

Regards,
Malc.

damn, this thread made me buy a xbox... ;-)

it will be 'upgraded' with a 'special' feature next week so it becomes my all-media jukebox connected to my home e-smith network.

I'll let you guys know how it works out.

guestHH

Ya'll let me know what you think of the system, if you guys like it then I may have to shell out $40 for such a special modification :)

Ok guys, I got it working. Full Success.

- SME 5.5
- xbmp 2.1
- xbms 3.0.5

Now I have my own Super All Media JukeBox.

I must say I'm _very_ impressed by the work done by all those hackers to create an alternative Bios and Dashboard. The quality is very good.
Also I'm very impressed by the available software quality like xbmp.

This opens up a whole new multi media playground on my tv.

If there any interest I will make up a how-to and publish the files needed.

guestHH

Thanks for your effort.

Hi all,
No xbox yet but testing futher.

In the xbms.conf, what USER and GROUP should be used?

I currently get the error "WARNING! Could not change to group www(102): Operation not permitted"

Thanks,
Mal.

Try using your own non-root account. You can test further by using the root account, but only if you ar sure and safe about that. Although you get that error (can not change...) it will work.

This thread got my attention as I am doing the same thing now. to bring you up to speed I have a non-moded xbox, XBMP is now the default dashboard.

I fiddled around with the SMB stuff before giving up and moving to XBMS I get the group error as well but I find that unless the dirs are set for everyone to read I can not get the xbox to read from them.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Sean

Sean, talk to me about getting XBMP on the un-modded XBOX.  Did you use the font exploit to load another dashboard?  Any information would be quite helpful and appreciated.
