Install the User-Manager panel.

The user-panel package provides (when you logon to it i.e. https://www.yourdomain.com/user-manager) a 'vacation message' and the option of enabling/disabling.  Works well for what you are asking about.  you can get it in the contribs or here:

I find this simpler.

I believe this is one of the things that the User Manager is based on. The User Manager is much more than this, and provides lots of useful options for users. With the User Manager, each user can set their own vacation message, which I think is more appropriate than having the SME admin doing it.

Also, that one is listed for 4.1.2. It sounds like it still works with the newer versions, but there have been several bugfixes to the User Manager panel. I think at least one of them involved not getting mail after an autoreply was sent, so you may want to use the newer version...

True, but if you don't want / need any extra bits, I always believe in a minimalist approach when having anything to do with the server.

I use it on 5.1.2 with no hassles.

Never had this problem with the contrib I used. Perhaps it's only a problem with the User Manager panel version ?
