Title: NAT(Masq) problem with MSN Messenger
Post by: fabrizio on January 12, 2003, 10:44:41 PM
Hi All,

I set up Sme Server v5.5 and it has no problems.
It is connected with my client trough Windows XP, but when I run
MSN Messenger I have some problems to start a vocal conversation.
The MSN option of Instant Messenger works very well, but when I am
going to start a vocal conversation MSN said that the NAT function could
obstract the passage of the date.
In my opinion we can find the problem in file Masq.
I put the ip_masq_mms.o module inside the Masq.
I am unable at the moment to resolve this type of problem.
Can you help me as soon as possible ?

Fabrizio from Catania.

MSN for voice uses any one of a number of ports (I believe it's in the range of several thousand ports at random) trying to open the ports required to make this work is a huge task and would leave your system very insecure I would think. Not sure if anyone else has got this working without leaving their system wide open, but I would be interested to know if anyone has found a way to make this viable.

You will find several of these services will not function properly unless you have a public IP address (they endeavour to connect point to point and NAT prevents this).

This stuff fails whenever a person is behind a NAT'd firewall and is running a private IP address.

The voice function works with MS Netmeeting.

However, I do not have it working for MSN Messenger.

Knowing this may indicate that it is not JUST because we are using NAT with SME.

It seems to be specific to MSN.

As Serge surmised it doesn't matter what kind of NAT'd firewall is in place; I have also encountered this problem when a client was using a Netgear DG814 ADSL router/firewall.
