maybe I posted too soon...just curious to hear feedback on upgrades. I run several websites, geneology server, sql-ledger (postgresql), mailing-lists, forums, etc; plus I have many 'contribs' installed and don't wish to break things.
I don't require the H.323, ICQ and RTSP protocols which I see are not supported in 5.6.
This statement in the 'upgrade' docs..."Caution should be observed if any custom templates have been created. Changes in the structure of standard templates between releases can cause existing custom templates to be inappropriate and to interfere with normal server function. The recommended strategy is to remove custom templates before upgrading and then re-apply each custom template if still applicable." is not a major concern, assuming that the upgrade in general handles these custom-templates similar to previous upgrades.
This "The upgrade option no longer re-installs packages which are already installed, reducing the time taken to perform a system upgrade." sounds appealing, as I believe this is what messed me up on a previous upgrade.
Anyway, probably too early to get a good accessment?

If you have an extra machine laying around, I would ghost a copy of your current server to it, perform the upgrade, see what happens.... That's how I found out I'd rather do the clean install.

Excellent idea! And I do have one...

Great idea:)
I was thinking about an restore-from-backup from v5.5 to v5.6 but after this I am certain to do a clean install and after that restore my sites and databases from a backup onto a clean install.

I (and many others) experienced an error upgrading machnines with 64MB RAM and I reported this as a bug to Mitel. They acknowledged that there is a problem upgrading SME Server with less than the minimum requirement for RAM. (They told me in an e-mail that it's now roughly 256MB). Backup, perform a fresh install, and restore. It worked for me.
