I updated my proftpd with the rpm from freshrpms.
I installed it, did a
[root@io files]# rpm -Uvh e-smith-proftpd-1.8.0-01.noarch.rpm --force
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:e-smith-proftpd ########################################### [100%]
[root@io files]# /sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/proftpd.conf
then
[root@io files]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/proftpd restart
Shutting down proftpd: [ FAILED ]
Starting proftpd: [ OK ]
it does this everytime I restart proftpd, and I now cannot ftp into my site.
Did I miss a step?

To my knowledge proftpd starts from xinetd when a user tries to connect. So I would try to connect to it and see if it works.
