Title: incoming mail is down please help
Post by: Rob Shiras on January 22, 2003, 04:30:11 AM
I have e-smith 5.1 running.
Outgoing mail works fine.  I am receiving no incoming mail to any of my accounts on my server.  I can receive incoming mail through my ISP, at rshiras@speakeasy.net.
I don't know what could have done this.  I added another virtual domain recently, and my ISP says all the primary and secondary DNS hosting is all set up fine.  I have also recently been trying to establish a pptp connection, but I haven't had to make any changes on my server in order to accomplish that.  I am a newbie, and my guru is on vacation for a week.  Can someone please tell me which logs to check or what to restart?  I have restarted httpd, named, spamd and qmail.  Incidentally, I did try to add a blacklist_to recently, but it wasn't working, and I took it out.  However, I did notice a * at the beginning of a blacklist_from line, which must have been a typo, and I have removed it and restarted the server.  Still no change.  Thanks in advance,
Rob

Thanks for your help.  It looked promising, but I don't have smtpfront-qmail.
[root@bastion init.d]# pwd
/etc/rc.d/init.d
[root@bastion init.d]# ls
anacron            daemontools            gpm            ipchains    killall  mysqld      pcmcia   rawdevices    squid
apmd               daemontools.functions  halt           ipsec       kudzu    mysql.init  pppoe    single        sshd
atalk              dhcpd                  hdparm         iptables    ldap     named       pptpd    smb           syslog
atd                diald                  httpd          iscanhttpd  local    netfs       proftpd  smtpfwdd      xinetd
bootstrap-console  e-smith-service        httpd-admin    kdcrotate   lpd      network     qmail    spamassassin
crond              functions              httpd-e-smith  keytable    masq     ntpd        random   spamd
[root@bastion init.d]#

I tried starting everything I could find here, but still no incoming mail.

Have you tryed telnet to your box, from the outside, or tryed testing it from here:

http://www.zmailer.org/mxverify.html

I dont really know anything about virtual domain hosting, or what a pptp even is, but when you were playing round with the blacklist lines, did you use the template system or just edit the original file?

Not that it would have anything to do with it, I think......... I dunno really, just grasping at straws :-)

Can you send mail internally, eg from address@yourdomain.com to anotheraddress@yourdomain.com because if that works then I think that you can rule out any service that might not be running or broken, I think.

I am pretty much a newbie too so, at this point I'd be calling someone for help :-)

I can telnet to my box.  I have tested rob@shiras.net from http://www.zmailer.org/mxverify.html and it says Apparently OK!
pptp is VPN.
I don't know what the blacklist template is.  I edit  /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf.
I can send mail within my intranet (from whoever to rob@shiras.net) and it goes ot OK, but it doesn't come in.
Is there a way to check and see if the emails are being stored somewhere, or if they are going into the bit bucket?
Thanks again,
Rob

Hmmm I have never played around with spam assassin, but if you can send mail alright and it doesnt get bounced back to you is very worrying.

Have you had a look at the qmail logs? I am not familiar with 5.1, but you still should be able to view the log files from the server manager.

Thats about all my expert advice :-)

Here is the end of my qmail current log.  I am concerned about the attempt to mail websalesjet.com since that is a known spammer and I don't want to be mailing them anyway.  If anyone has any suggestions, please jump in.
Thanks,
Rob

OK got it.  I had a corrupted qmail-queue.
I recommend making a backup of this file!
cp /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue.sav

rob

Are you saying that if you have a corrupt mail queue then that will stop email being onforwarded to your email client?

I am running imap, and until I had to replace a hard drive in a RAID setup it was going fine.

Now I can send emails out, but not receive them.  If I use webmail the emails are there.
when I use Outlook, its nogo.

Thanks
John

Are you using anti-virus?
If so, You might want to re-try downloading the data files.  Rob

Hi guys

I had a corrupt mail file (I don't know what the file is called).

I reinstalled 5.6, set up a single user and the mail for that user worked fine.

So I am back on-line so far . . .

Thanks

John
