I downloaded the newest version of SME 5.6 and burnt it onto cd, but when I tried to install it onto my server it gets to "starting anaconda" and stays there?

Same for me.
I run a Compaq Proliant 1600, 2xP2 333Mhz, 328Mb RAM

Make sure your firmaware is upto date. My Proliant 1600 firmware was dated 1998, when I flashed it to the latest revision (2000) anaconda stopped hanging.
Hope that helps.

I have the same problem. Everything worked fine with 5.5. The install errors after "running anaconda" "you do not have enough memory to start graphical interface" and then several errors come : "/usr/bin/anaconda" line 603 , in ?
tried during boot up : shift , tab which leads you to "boot:", accept mem=32M works fine.
5.5 works well on the same box. box is 120 Mhz/32ram/ata33hdd. What could be the problem ? I am currently running 2 sme boxes in the office on p3, but trying everything at home on the test machine first. Afraid I might get problems if I screw up the office ( actually they cannot fire me - I am the president - but you never know ).
Help appreciated

In our experience 5.6 needs more than 32M to install/upgrade. I'm not sure about "run", since we didn't get that far. We've upped our minimum hardware recommendations as a result.

FWIW
My system appeared to hang at "starting anaconda" (minutes) but as per my SOP I went and made a coffee and when I got back it had made it to the next screen.

On a P166, that sounds normal to me (speed-wise)
