I have an SME server acting as a server and gateway and have allowed 1 PPTP connection. I have done this to test the functionality of Outlook Express from off-site and am able to send external emails fine. My client machine outside the network is XP. My issue is that, when I have the PPTP connection activated and use IE, the traffic appears to be going via the PPTP connection and out the SME gateway. I don't see this as desirable as I will in effect be paying twice for browsing.
Does anyone know how to stop IE (in fact all other) traffic using the PPTP connection while allowing Outlook Express to connect?
Thanks

I *think* that when you set up the PPTP connection under Advanced TCP/IP Settings you disable "Use default gateway on remote network".

That's correct. Disabling it will use the standard route through your ISP. The PPTP connection will only be used for addresses on the LAN. FYI, if yourdomain.com is a live domain on the internet, it will go through your ISP. You'll need to use 192.168.0.1 or whatever the SME's private IP is to force traffic to be routed through the PPTP connection.
If you're just trying to get external access to send mail, it's probably a whole lot easier to just install Damian's SASL package, which allows SMTP user authentication. Just change one thing in OE's account properties and it'll always work. It also enables SSL connections, so all the traffic between the client and server (including your password) is encrypted, instead of plaintext. http://www.pagefault.org/code/e-smith.shtml#securemail

Guys, thanks heaps for the pointers. I'll work through them and look at which best suits the needs at the time. Thanks again,

By the way, I have tried disabling the Use Default GW on Remote NW and it works a treat. I'll try Damian's package over the weekend.
Thanks again,
