I started running SME 5.1 on a EPIA-800 several months ago. I recently rebuilt the machine with SME 5.5 and have had no hardware related problems.

It's good to hear you have 5.6 working. And with the fanless Eden processor! Have you run into any performance issues ? Some people are suggesting the minimum hardware requirements for SME have gone up a bit with 5.6.

I've got e-smith 5.5 on a 800 MHz VIA mini-itx.

I've got two Seagate Barracudas in a software raid config.

I am trying to sort out why it is extremely slow serving files. It appears that there's a small burst, then a wait then some more etc.. The switch it's running into is 100Mbps autosensing, and I'm using the standard VIA Rhine NIC driver. I expected a performance hit with writing and software raid, but I'm not sure why it's slow reading.

No issues, just runs perfectly.

Yeap, here is another Setup running SME 5.6 on VIA EPIA 800MHz with 256MB RAM, old FUJITSU 10GB (for testing it will be replaced in near future with WD-8MB cache) RIA Ethernet for WAN and Natinal Semi. 10/100/1000 Eth for LAN (it is LevelONE Giga Card). Everything is running OK. I have Hylafax instaled too (with ext. modem) and works great.

Before I set this up I try to check If this box can riun as an ISDN gateway using ASUS ISDN internal CARD for DialUp gateway (in this case is RIA Eth used for LAN of course). Well everything works OK in this case too.

I am going to set up VPN for Local Pharmacy with this boxes (fileserver, gateway etc). You will hear all reports HowTo-s If needed...

Cheers,

Andrej

There is some kind of problem with SME 5.6 and Seagate Barracudas in software mirror setups, or just with Seagate Barracudas i software mirrors. The usual symptom is that the install takes hours.

I ran into that on my first install of 5.1 and the problem turned out to be a bad IDE cable. There was a warning at boot saying something to the effect of "no 80 pin cable detected on the primary IDE channel" which motivated me to change the cable. I still see the pauses to some extent but the transfers are at least 4 times faster than they were before the cable change.

I use my VIA-EPIA 800 for testing and compiling and so far no problems what so ever with this board.

Good to know Paul :-) We'll talk about it off-list.

Thankyou for your suggestions on reading slowness from Seagate barracudas.

I'll try without RAID (and update to v5.6 at the same time).

I've got some problems on via 800mhz mini-itx with the lan card which seems to hang sometimes when I submit a large amount of data (copying a large file to samba ibay or user's home for instance). The server does not hang, neither does samba, but the networks gets down.
It's with a 5.5 issue.
Does anybody knows if there's a better driver than the standard via-rhine for the built-in lan interface ?

I am running ver 5.6 without any problems at all. I will go for an uprade instead of new driver ?!
