Title: manual dialing to ISP
Post by: Jason Smith on February 18, 2003, 05:59:19 AM
Just wondering if it is possible with 5.5/5.6 to have the dialup policy set to never, and dial manually from the CLI? I'm used to doing this with Redhat/wvdial (one phone line at home and it will only be used after hours.)

thanks

This is only a suggestion, I am not saying it is the best method, but it sure works.

Set all the dial up policies to continuous, then just connect & disconnect the phone lead as required. My brother has only 1 phone line, and uses this method with a SME 5.5 server no problems. When he wants to connect, he just plugs the phone line in and presto !!

Hope this helps to some extent.

I have an rpm that I just click on the disable modem button and it dissconnects, and then when I need to go back on I just hit the enable modem button works great, i cannt remember where I downloaded it from though, the name of it is :

e-smith-dialup-0.1-1.noarch.rpm

If you cannt find it I can email it to you directly, it is an awesome rpm for users of 56k modems :-)

It allows you to change your dial-up settings (username/pass/phone number), phone line settings (tone/wait for tone), modem settings (enable/disable modem speaker/ modem serial port/ serial port speed) and dial-up policy (how often it wiil ring)

I did think of that... but the server's tucked away in a fairly inaccessable spot... quite deliberately mind you (Two and a half year olds just love hitting the reset button... believe me) That rpm sounds great....i'll take a look around and see if I can find it.
