Hi, I've a problem with the installation of Unreal Tournament Server on sme ver 5.6. I followed the howto at...
http://www.simsart.org/cybernews/howtos/Howto%20Install%20Unreal%20Tournament%20Server%20on%20SME%205.1.2.htm
When I try to run the ucc.init start as user nobody I get...
"This user is not currently available"
I didn't have this problem with sme5.12. I've searched the forums and there was a similar problem with 5.5 but there didn't seem to ba a solution.
Can someone please help?
Many thanks

I have a similar problem with 5.5 and did not receive any helpfull responces. For the time being, I'm running the game server as root only when playing. When were done for the night, I stop the game server. This is certainly not the correct solution but it works for now.
User privleges seem to be a vary basic issue that many in the community assumes you know about if your messing with LINUX. Hence, I have not been able to find any clear documentation on the subject. Knowledge gaps like this are an inevitable side effect of being self taught. A clue on where to start and how privleges relate specificly to SME would be helpfull.

Thanks for your reply RayG.
Could you tell me how to run the server as root please?
Thanks

Edit the ucc.init file in the ut-server directory. About the 4th line down is the MYUSERID variable. Set it to root and the server will be able to run. It's pretty dangerous to let it run as root I'm told. We really need to work out this permissions issue.

Thanks again. I'll give it a try. The server will only be used among a group of friends for a day and then shut down so running as root shouldn't be a problem.

Hi RayG,
Setting USERID as root allows the server to run. However, the web admin interface doesn't work properly. Some of the pages (frames) won't display. I've got the admin running on port 8888 after searching and finding some references to the web admin not working properly on kernel 2.4 It's supposed to be OK from 2.4.18. e-smith is 2.4.18-5 I think. Have you had this problem as well?
Thanks

Hi.
At my place, we tryed running it on a 5.5 also with no luck.
Our solution was to install a clean 5.1 server, then it will run with no problems.

Norrie, I'm glad to hear you got it up and running. I don't use the web admin because I've found it to be generally unstable/unreliable on any platform depending on what your trying to do with it. I do all my game editing manually in the UnrealTournament.ini file in the System folder.

I put a new NIC in my machine last night (Netgear FA311 - 10/100) and had some trouble transferring files to my server. Very very slow. When Ssh'ing in things were very slow too. I mucked around with the NIC setting in windoze and found that setting the card to 10Mb full duplex sped this up a huge amount. Also, the UT web admin now works fine! I also reconfigured my UT server to use the text based web admin which is much faster too.
So, thanks for helping me.
All the best
Norrie
