I installed 5.6 earlier this week, with absolutely no problems. This was on an old Dell PowerEdge 2100, Pentium Pro 180.

well, I have tried many times to install to a pentium 3, and an amd 1100 thunder something, and it keeps crashing during the install.

I have been running e-smith in various forms for the past 2 1/2 years, from version 3 point something, but don't really have the time to find out all the details about what might make redhat crash at an install, but have never had this before (not being able to install on machines that have had e-smith before). The crash happens either during the boot up sequence, or sometimes during the install of rpms, normally at the start when trying to install glibc-common.

I do use norton ghost on drives, which might be a problem, and an upgrade of the current server (5.12) is not possible as I have adapted it a bit, and the upgrade crashes (this I was always used to in the past)

I have downloaded from sites in Austria dn the Netherlands, and burnt the cd with nero, onto both a re-writable and a non-re-writable.

I managed to get one install (the only one) completed on the amd, just now, (my server pc) and then transfered the hard disk to the pentium 3, but it doesn't boot, just hands after "ok booting the kernal".

regards,

Try instaling on the server pc... it wont work if you install on another pc and then move the hard drive. : )

... and use PC's with 128M or more. 64MB works only with 5.5.

I have always moved e-smith disks from one pc to another in the past, so not being able to move it must be new with 5.6, and it still doesn't explain why I can't install it on the pentium 3 (which has 512 mb of ram). I have now tried three different hard disks, even using an old redhat disk to remove the partitions so that e-smith can start on a clean disk.

I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the type of graphics card. This PC has a dual head matrox, which of course is useless for e-smith, but is a left over from other uses! Thats the only strange hardware issue that there is in that computer.

Just a suggestion but might be the CD Rom drive brand/version.  I have see a few Linux distributions that will not install with some CD Roms likely due to incorrect drivers or a like.  Easest to just swap the drive and retry.

Did you check that you have a good iso image with the MD5 checksum?
