Can I run Nessus with the firewall on SME?

My understanding of Nessus is that it won't give accurate results unless it's directly exposed to the Internet, so it'd have to be running ON the SME server.  I assume that's what you mean?  I tried compiling Nessus on a test SME server but was never successful; I understand others have had success with RPMs.
