Title: Both dynamic and static leases present
Post by: John Crisp on February 26, 2003, 06:01:56 PM
Hi all,

I have a 5.1.2 SP 3 server running as server and gateway and as a DHCP server.

I recently decided that as I had only a small net work I would complete the hostnames and addresses section in the server-manager with the hostnames, IP address and Mac address for each machine so that they would retain their IP numbers.

The server logs now keep reporting the following :

Feb 26 14:36:56 wingate dhcpd: Both dynamic and static leases present for 192.168.42.33.
Feb 26 14:36:56 wingate dhcpd: Either remove host declaration david.localnet.com or remove 192.168.42.33
Feb 26 14:36:56 wingate dhcpd: from the dynamic address pool for 192.168.42.0
Feb 26 14:36:56 wingate dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.42.33 from 00:c0:f0:4d:8e:32 via eth0
Feb 26 14:36:56 wingate dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.42.33 to 00:c0:f0:4d:8e:32 via eth0

and so on for each IP that tries to get an IP.

If I remove the hostnames and addresses from the panel, then the server seems to forget about all the machines on the network and returns 'host unknown if you try to ping by name from the server or from the clients.

Somewhere, somehow I have something wrong but can't see what the hell it is. I also note that the DHCP clients try to renew their lease every six hours. Is this correct behaviour ?

Anybody give me some direction ?

I also note that my Win2K machine generates the following :

Feb 26 14:41:19 wingate named[1594]: denied update from [192.168.42.30].2037 for "fatuk.com" IN
Feb 26 14:41:19 wingate named[1594]: denied update from [192.168.42.30].2042 for "42.168.192.in-addr.arpa" IN

I don't think that it's related at all, but I'm curious as to why the Win2K machine does it and not the Win98 machines.

"When assigning static IPs to hostnames in the Hostnames and address panel, do not use IPs which are within your dynamic DHCP range."
