Hi All,
I have a problem with a customer's server (now at 5.6) where the /var/log directory had been deleted.
I had restored the /var/log directory from tape, but success was partial.
What is broken now is Samba.
Users report that they can't open files with long filenames. In many cases, they have to copy the file from the public share on the server to their local hard drive, then they can open and work on the file.
They also report that sometimes, rather than just double-clicking a file to open it, they have to open the application first, then open the file from within the application.
Does anyone know what's going on here or how to troubleshoot (or fix) this problem? How to recreate the Samba logging files/functions?

Your problem may have nothing to do with Samba. The symptoms are quite typical of a probleem that occurs with Windows workstations. Check out this document in the Microsoft Knowledge Base...
