installed 5.6 on a new machine i had 5.5 on installed all updates then
i noticed the cdrom didn't work pointed to /dev/scd0 had to repoint it back to /dev/hdd .
then followed the instuctions to install the burner, rebooted and the cdrom is still set as /dev/hdd and not /dev/scd0 or scd1.
any ideas.
and yes i did repoint the cdrom to /dev/scd0 when i was testing.
i did a cdrecord -scanbus and all i got was
Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.
looks like a driver is missing( i did the standard install)
any help would be good ( is this a fault with 5.6 cause it worked in 5.5)

Don't think there is an error in 5.6 Darren,
But without log files, nobody will be able to guess what's goin on.
Include the relevant portions of the /var/log/messsages file.
(where it detects the drives)
I've done numerous cd-writer install's, scsi/ide/old/new. Every drive 'just worked'. There is no need to install anything extra. Everything needed is already in 5.6, unless you have some really obscure hardware..

forget about it i reinstalled the sme 5.6 again with the burner actually in the machine and it worked fine and i just watched the cdrecord -scanbus to see if any changes happened.
the reason I didn't have the burner in at first is the install was causing problems yesterday so I had removed all unnecessary devices. then i updated the system pluged the burner in and it would only word on hdd.
Dont know what the problem was but it all works now.
