The best, and shortest, HOWTO on public DNS I can give you is "don't". DNS is easy to get wrong, and "bind" is difficult to configure securely.  Are you sure that you need to host DNS yourself?

I agree with Charlie.....don't host it unless you really have to....go to www.mydomain.com or www.zoneedit.com.......free primary and secondary of DNS hosting + reliable....

I was using mydomain.com..until they and all the domains registered with them went down due to some kind of hack attack.  Both the primary and secondary name servers failed.  This was back in January.  My agency had no web presence or email for 12 hours.  Even the mydomain.com site was down due to the loss of the name servers.

I am now using registerfly.com and love this service, plus it is half the price of mydomain.com.  Full DNS (web based) control for all domains registered with them for 8 bucks a year.

By the way, you can use all of mydomain.com DNS services without registering with them...I would only use them as a backup name server.

just my 2 cents.
