Title: dropping connection
Post by: Matthew Humphreys on May 07, 2001, 08:41:06 PM
I'm hoping that someone who's using e-smith to can help me resolve my
problem.

e-smith works fine - for anything to 10 to 30 minutes, then it drops
the connection to NTL (cable modem connection).  If I reboot the server it conects again straight away!

Has anyone else experienced this sort of behaviour?

I've configured Freesco on the same box, and when I boot into that the
connection remains for days, so I guess the hardware is all OK.

Hope someone can help me out

Thanks,

Matt

Have tried to ping outside my local network, from the e-smith server, when the connection fails, but with no success.

Tried to cycle the external NIC down and up etc, but this still didn't reconnect to the outside world.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Have just rebooted with Freesco to allow me to post this!

Thanks again,

Matt

Mat:
You can check your /var/log/messages file to "grep" some warnings or error lines related with your dial up process.
you will probably "connection reset by peer" or "closing down iddle link" or something that could help you (and the people in the forum) get more acurate idea about your problem
It could be many things related with the way your isp keeps your connection alive, but the e-smith box will give you the clue!
